An also-play is an alternate number to play in addition to or instead of your HOT Pick 3 or Pick 4 digit. Playing the hot number (in red) and the also-plays or alternates (in white) increases your chances of winning. Betting the entire group of numbers costs more, but in the long run a player will win more.
